What is the ruling for pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women regarding fasting in Ramadan?

Question

What is the ruling for pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women regarding fasting in Ramadan?

Answer

1.    Pregnant Women
If she fears for herself only, she may break her fast and is required to make up the missed days (qada) later. No fidyah is required.
If she fears for her baby, she must make up the missed fasts and pay fidyah (feed a poor person for each missed day), according to many scholars.
2.    Breastfeeding Women
If she fears for herself, she must make up the fasts later, and some scholars say fidyah is not required.
If she fears for her child, she must make up the fasts and pay fidyah for each day missed.
3.    Postpartum Women (Nifas)
A woman experiencing postpartum bleeding does not fast or pray during this period (which may last up to 40 days).
She must make up the missed fasts, but not the prayers.
